We live in a world where reaching out often waits for a reason. A birthday, a work anniversary, engagement a milestone that gives us “permission” to connect.
Meanwhile, half of Australians say they’re only somewhat happy at work, and around one in three will tell you they often dread going to the office not because they don’t care, but because the moments of connection and appreciation are too sparse according to ‘Talked 2025 workplace happiness report.'
In our personal and professional lives alike, we tend to save gratitude for moments that feel suitable, rather than moments that feel real.
But what if the most meaningful connection isn’t held until tomorrow, or until someone’s “due” to hear from you?
What if connection matters most when it’s unexpected?
There’s a simple idea that feels particularly powerful: every time someone crosses your mind, spend just one minute reaching out.
Not because there’s an occasion or a goal just because they mattered in that moment.
Send a quick voice note to a friend:
“Hey, you popped into my head today. I’m really glad you’re in my life.”
Text a colleague who helped you recently:
“That quick chat you gave me the other day made a real difference. Thank you.”
Call someone who shaped you:
“I was thinking about that time you encouraged me to keep going. It still sticks with me.”
These are tiny moments but the impact isn’t.
When we wait for celebrations to reach out, we outsource our connection to the calendar instead of the heart. We hold appreciation for the “scheduled” moments and let the spontaneous ones slip past.
This matters especially in a time when work pressures are real, and emotional connection can feel transactional.
One minute is short enough that you can’t use “busy” as an excuse. It’s intentional, concise, and generous by design.
Remember to talk not just with colleagues or clients but also with the people who shape us and help us think clearly, lead effectively, and feel supported along the way.
Reaching out unexpectedly doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to be real.
Next time someone crosses your mind, don’t wait for an occasion.
Take the minute.
Send the message.
Let someone know they mattered today.
It’s one minute of action that might mean so much to someone else.
Stay well,
